Another camera-shy opal! ✨
This 3D wood replacement opal is such an unusual little beauty. Wood replacement opal forms when ancient wood is gradually replaced by opalized silica, preserving the original structure and details of the wood while transforming it into opal. You can actually see remnants of the original wood within and beneath the stone, making each piece incredibly unique.
This particular opal has the most intriguing hue of purple, with just a tiny hint of green peeking through on one side. And like many opals, it has a personality of its own — in different lighting, it can look like an entirely different stone. It was definitely another one that refused to cooperate with my camera!
I set it in fine and sterling silver and heavily oxidized the entire piece, purposely leaving the silver nearly black. The dark patina makes the purple in the opal glow and beautifully highlights the small 14k gold accent at the bottom.
I attached it to a sterling silver paperclip chain in a Y-drop style, giving the necklace a beautiful bit of movement and an elegant, elongated look.
The stone in its setting measures approximately 21mm including the bale x 11mm.
The necklace measures just under 17 inches, with the Y-drop hanging approximately 1.25 inches.
A completely one-of-a-kind piece with an organic, mysterious feel — part ancient wood, part opal, and a whole lot of magic.
