Another camera-shy opal! πππ
This little heart is one of those stones that simply refuses to show all of its magic in a photograph. In person, itβs full of color, with dreamy swirls of green, blue, and yellow, along with the slightest hint of cobalt blue that seems to appear as the stone moves.
This is Australian pipe opal, a fascinating type of opal found in the opal fields of Australia, particularly in the famous Lightning Ridge region of New South Wales. Pipe opal gets its name from its distinctive formation, often occurring in narrow, tubular or vein-like structures within the surrounding rock. Like so many Australian opals, each piece is completely individual, with its own combination of color, pattern, and character.
I set this sweet little heart entirely in fine silver, including the shank, and added one tiny 14k gold dot for just a touch of warmth. The silver has been oxidized and brushed to give the ring a softly worn, organic finish that lets the colors of the opal take center stage.
The opal in its setting measures approximately 12mm x 14mm, and the band is approximately 5mm wide.
