This stone is new to me, and I was thrilled to find a few cabochons! This is Luna Lacuna, also known as Black Moon Turquoise, from Hubei, China. Its dramatic mix of deep black, soft gray, and warm earthy tones makes it unlike any turquoise I've worked with before.
I set it in fine and sterling silver and added a few copper nubs to bring out the subtle brown tones in the stone. Rather than oxidizing the silver, I gave the entire piece a soft matte finish, allowing the striking pattern of the stone to take center stage.
The stone, in its setting, measures approximately 25mm across (including the copper nubs).
Lucky size 9.
